Lernik Alexanyan: We should resolve issue of Artsakh status

Member of Republican Party of Armenia parliamentary group Lernik Alexanyan said that the ruling of the International Court of Justice on Kosovo will definitely have a positive impact on the Karabakh conflict resolution.

However, one should not expect it to have a considerable impact on the international recognition of NKR’s independence, Alexanyan told a press conference in Yerevan, PanARMENIAN.Net reported.

According to Alexanyan, though the ruling has a consultative nature, it was made within juridical logics. “The ruling is a good basis to transfer the Karabakh problem from the political field into a legal one. At last, the ruling will open the eyes of Azerbaijanis to the fact that the Karabakh conflict may be resolved in the legal field,” noted Alexanyan.

As for recognition of NKR’s independence by Armenia, he said that Armenia should do it at a well-chosen moment.

“Armenia should keep this step as a trump card in its relations with Azerbaijan to use it at the right moment,” said Alexanyan.

“We all are for compromises, not for concessions. We should resolve the issue of Artsakh status, and only then address return of lands,” he told reporters.

“Artsakh independence is an issue of principle and prior issue for us, meanwhile the issue of its security is no less important,” Alexanyan said adding that if Azerbaijan recognizes Artsakh independence, it is a compromise already, Aysor.am reported.

Lernik Alexanyan said that International Court of Justice ruling on Kosovo is an advisory decision, it can be basis for moving the issue from political field to the legal one.

The RPA member believes that recognition of NKR independence by Armenia should be timely.
