Armenian FM‬ met the President of the ‪UN‬ ‪Human Rights‬ Council and High Commissioner for Human Rights

On March 3, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward ‪Nalbandian‬ met the President of the UN Human Rights Council Joachim ‪‎Rucker‬ in Geneva.

During the meeting Armenia’s Second Universal Periodic Review discussion at the UN ‪‎HRC‬ in January, 2015, and its recommendations were touched upon.

Minister Nalbandian informed Joachim Rucker that Armenia, as an important player in the fight of international community against crimes against humanity, is submitting a Resolution on ‪Prevention‬ of ‪Genocide‬ to the UN Human Rights Council at its 28th session. Edward Nalbandian underlined that it is important that the UN member-states unconditionally support the international collective efforts in the prevention of new crimes against humanity.

The next meeting of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia was with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad ‪Al Hussein‬.

Minister Nalbandian and High Commissioner Al Hussein exchanged thoughts on steps undertaken in protection of human rights in Armenia. In this regard, Minister Nalbandian mentioned, that by the records of international structures significant positive achievements have been reached in Armenia in the fields of democratic reforms, good governance, protection of human rights, freedom of assembly, speech, media, internet and others. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, confirming that democracy has been considerably strengthened in Armenia, expressed hope that steps undertaken in this direction would continue.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights attached importance to Armenia’s subsequent initiatives in support of international community’s efforts on the genocide prevention.
