Criminal court case over domestic violence will take place in Gavar city
Women Support Center in Armenia presents a press release about the domestic violence cases, which especially says:
"On April 2nd 2014, at 2pm Hasmik Khacahtryan’s criminal court case will take place at the first instance court of general jurisdiction in Gavar city.
Hasmik’s story is typical of the many cases of Domestic Violence that happen in Armenia. In Hasmik’s case, as it is in many cases, the marriage was functional, even pleasant in the beginning. The abuse began psychologically through put downs and threats, but intensified over the years, gradually becoming as serious as repeated physical beatings and torture.
Abusers seek control. Hasmik’s abuser used a slow and intentional process of threats disallowing Hasmik to see friends and relatives - this keep victims like Hasmik isolated so that the abuse can continue unchecked. Many women stay in such relationships for a variety of reasons - in order to save their marriage, due to the shame and stigma society places on divorced women, and most often fear for their children and their own safety.
In 2014, already five women died due to domestic violence. It is a widespread problem in Armenia, yet very few know the seriousness of this issue. No one should live in constant fear for their life and nothing justifies violence".
The journalists are invited to write about the story. Transportation will be provided, leaving from republic square (in front of the fountains) on April 2nd, 2pm.
