Austrian Parliament recognizes Armenian Genocide

All the six fractions of the Austrian Parliament adopted a joint statement on the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide. The Advisor at the Embassy of Armenia to Austria Ashot Alexanyan informed Armenpress that the statement was officially made public during the April 22 session of Austrian Parliament. The representatives of all the parliamentary groups honored the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims with a moment of silence. According to Alexanyan, the adoption of the joint statement can be considered to be the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Austrian Parliament.

The statement clearly defines the massacre of Armenians in 1915 as genocide and calls on Turkey to face its history and recognize the Armenian Genocide. Austria admits its responsibility as the Austro-Hungarian Empire allied Turkey during WWI.
