January 16 is declared as ‘The Beatles day’ by UNESCO in 2001.

On January 16, 1957, the Cavern club was opened where The Beatles debuted, a band which will become one of the most renowned bands in the 20th century.

The Beatles released 13 original albums in only 7 years. Never before or since has any rock band come close to that quantity and quality of output.

John Lennon was considered the leader of the Beatles since he started the band.

The four members of the Beatles are always referred to as : John, Paul, George and Ringo.

They gained popularity in the United Kingdom after their first hit “Love me Do”, in late 1962.

They acquired the nickname “the Fab Four” as Beatlemania grew in Britain over the following year.
By early 1964 they had become international stars, leading the “British Invasion” of the United States pop market.

On January 16 fans around the world organize various events dedicated to the legendary band.

After their break-up in 1970, they each enjoyed successful musical careers of varying lengths.

McCartney and Starr, the surviving members, remain musically active.

Lennon was shot and killed in December 1980, and Harrison died of lung cancer in November 2001.
