It’s still important for Obama to acknowledge Armenian Genocide-US congressman

Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif. 28), in an exclusive interview with Asbarez Editor Ara Khachatourian for Horizon Live on Friday called for Obama to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide.

He said that despite Armenian-Americans’ frustration with the administration, it was still important for the president to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide and articulate US policy.

The congressman further shared his comments upon the anti-Armenian reports debated by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) at its recent plenary session.

“I don’t think these are the last motions of the kind we are going to see at the Parliamentary Assembly.

And we’re going just to continue to mobilize against them. Part of it had a narrative that was not only the Azeri narrative, but also [the fact that they] want to change the composition of the group that would work on resolving the issues in the region.

That would stuck the deck in favor of Azerbaijan. It was important that it [Robert Walter’s report] was defeated. It wouldn’t have had an operative impact, but nonetheless, we need to continue the fight against these resolutions. ”

Adam Schiff condemned Azerbaijani aggression against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh and called out OSCE Minsk Group US Co-Chairman James Warlick’s false parity in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Mr Schiff said he believes that such a policy essentially encourages Azerbaijan, pushing it to more aggression.

He said that in a letter to Ambassador James Warlick, the US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, he expressed his concern over the policy of equivalence, emphasizing that Azerbaijan is the belligerent side in the conflict.

“I have written to the ambassador [James Warlick], raising my concerns over this policy of equivalence, because the actions are not at all equivalent.

You have Azerbaijan firing from tank and artillery, using snipers to kill soldiers in Nagorno-Karabakh, across the border… And I think what’s happening here – and it’s very dangerous – is domestic discontent rises in Azerbaijan, and the economies struggle and the lower oil prices have not helped to prop up that dictatorship, and Aliyev is doing what a lot of dictators do, which is cracking down on dissent, and, in the case of the Line of Contact, sparking a fight with the neighbor to distract the society from the domestic problems,” he said.
