Al-Monitor. No longer can Turkey invade Syria

Turkey desired to secure guarantees regarding the future of Syria to have the right to vote in decision-making through invading Syria, but now all that Turks can do is opening artillery fire at the neighboring country.

The Russian participation in the Syrian conflict deprived Turkey of any further actions.

The Syrian government forces through the Russian aircraft support cut off Turkey’s way of communication with Aleppo, which was used by radical Islamists.

It was a turning point for Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as  rumors circulateed  over the invasion of the Turkish Land Forces.

Erdogan and Davutoglu started to think  onlyover the military intervention, giving up the idea to overthrow Assad, they were forced to abandon their plan back in fall, when Russia joined the Syrian conflict.

Erdogan’s key objective changed once when the city was sieged by Assad’s forces.

He had been undertaking measures not to be fully out of the Syrian conflict and  ensuring that Turkey can have a voice in the process of determining the future status of the state.

Meantime Ankara realized that its unilateral invasion which does not receive the appropriate approval of the Allied forces is fraught with the direct confrontation with Russia.

The Syrian government forces through the support of the Russian aircraft were able to liberate the occupied positions of the jihadists and radical Islamists, who had been supported by Turkey.

Turkey’s scope of action reduced as soon as Russia took over the control of the airspace of Syria.

At present, Turkey is only able to strike at the Kurds in northern Syria, which proves the fact that Ankara’s key target is the Syrian Kurds and the objective not to allow them to be able to take advantage and form autonomy.
