A. Gul: “The meaning of the invitation to Armenia is really great”

In frame of his visit to Chicago Turkish President Abdullah Gul has held some meetings with various organizations. As turkishpress.com writes A. Gul had made a speech at Stanford University. During the speech he referred to the regional issues and spoke about his visit to Armenia.
Turkish President noted that good leader must risk sometimes and he had done it as well. He considers that visit to Armenia is an example. Remind that Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan invited Turkish President A. Gul to visit Yerevan and watch Armenia-Turkey football match on 2008.
“We have had almost no diplomatic relations during 20 years. The meaning of this invitation is really great for two neighbors, which have had so many disagreements during the history”, he said.
According to Gul it was a risky step for the inner politics and it might have many disputable points for the foreign policy as well. “My visit to Yerevan was Turkish President’s visit to Armenia. It was a sign that we express our satisfaction towards a little normalization of the relations between two nations. I still hope.  Our bilateral visits were the symbols of the normalization of our relations. Even if it was risky step, it was right decision”, Gul said.
