Hovannisian Returns to Liberty Square: “A new history begins today”

On February 1 in the morning at Heritage headquarters head of the “Heritage” party Raffi K. Hovannisian received German ambassador Reiner Morell. They discussed urgent matters concerning the changing political landscape of post-election Armenia. Subsequently Hovannisian took off for the Kotayk region, where the people marked on February 18 an unlikely victory over fear, bribery, and falsification. Raffi Hovannisian Headquarters informs about this.

By 5pm Raffi Hovannisian was at Liberty Square again, where tens of thousands of citizens had converged to renew their dedication to the popular movement. Joined by young university activists, the Oukht National Union’s Rafael Hambardzumyan, Artsakh MP Vahan Badasyan, singer-songwriter Rouben Hakhverdyan, actor and intellectual Vardan Petrosyan, Hovannisian was more confident than ever as he presided over the massive demonstration.

“On February 18, by overwhelming majority, the Armenian people voted for change,” Hovannisian declared. “They voted for a new beginning. In the past few days I have visited so many cities, towns, and villages—and I can report to your with pride that a new faith has been kindled in our republic. We have begun to believe again: in our rights, in our homeland, in our children’s future. This movement cannot be stopped.” After his speech Hovannisian called on all those present to raise their hands and vote on several issues concerning the popular democratic movement.

Today, at 12pm, Hovannisian will hold a public press conference at Liberty Square. Then, in somber commemoration of the tragedy of March 1, 2008, he will lead a memorial march to the Miasnikyan Statue. The following day, on March 2, the struggle will resume in full force, with a public rally at 5pm on Liberty Square.
