Ombudsman election to take place in National Assembly

As reports panorama. am the Parliament of Armenia prepares for elections of Armenia’s Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman), with political parties and factions nominating their candidates or saying which candidate they will endorse.

Orinats Yerkir faction has decided to back the candidacy of ‘Heritage’ faction member Zaruhi Postanjyan.

They support Ms. Postanjyan’s candidacy not only because of her qualities as a politician, but also to promote gender equality.

The faction of Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) will nominate PAP’s political board member, lawyer Makar Yeghiazaryan as candidate for ombudsman.

Three people are rumored to be possible candidates for ombudsman – human rights activist Narek Aloyan proposed by MP Tigran Urikhanyan, Zaruhi Postanjyan nominated by MP Edmon Marukyan, and Deputy Justice Minister Arman Tatoyan proposed by the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA).

Armenian National Congress (ANC) faction does not take part in ombudsman’s election as according to the ANC faction head Levon Zurabyan the ombudsman election is controlled by RPA that avoids any democratic election.
