Aravot: Increasing demand for surrogate mothers

The paper has learned that there is an increasing demand for surrogate mothers, as the infertility rate is reaching alarming levels in Armenia.

It says that the officially reported infertility rate is now 17% in the country, 2% above the ceiling established by the World Health Organization, citing statistical records.

“While some seem be earning money by “selling” a child, others enjoy the happiness of having an offspring, many specialists believe that a surrogate mother’s service may be a business rather than a good will for many.

The law does not regulate the price for the surrogate mother’s service, and even if it does, it isn’t likely to hold some back some from the temptation of earning money,” says the paper, adding that the service costs between 15,000-30,000 Armenian Drams ($30- $60) in Armenia.

Paper says the figure was reported by an individual citizen, not a medical institution.
