US lawmaker ruled out Senate new sanctions against Iran

A US lawmaker on Sunday ruled out new Senate sanctions against Iran while nuclear negotiations are being held during Munich Security Conference. Iranian IRNA writes about this.

Taking part in a panel talk on Iran at the Munich Security Conference, Senator Christopher Murphy said he did not expect any debate or action on the sanctions bill.

I can safely say there will be no vote as the senators are supporting the negotiations, the Democratic Senator from the US state of Connecticut said.

Congress had reportedly been considering whether to pass legislation that would impose a new round of sanctions against Tehran, something US President Barack Obama has said he would veto.

Meanwhile, Murphy voiced optimism that a long-term deal with Iran could be reached.

“The good news is an agreement is possible. We are on a clear path to an agreement,” said Murphy.

Murphy also reiterated there was “a good possiblity to achieve a result.” In November, Iran agreed to curb some of its uranium enrichment activities as part of a deal that would ease some Western sanctions.

The accord, which went into effect in January, provides six months of relief as negotiations continue over Iran’s nuclear program.
