International community condemns violations of press freedom in Turkey

The international community has strongly condemned the harassment against the “Zaman” newspaper by the Turkish authorities, the National Union of Journalists of England called the incident “very worrying”, reports “Armenpress”.

“What happened is contributing to the atmosphere of fear and self-censorship among journalists.

Thus, people’s right to get information is violated, the rule of law and democracy are also under a great threat”, it is said in the statement of the union.

The Spanish journalistic Confederation qualified the decision on the appointment of overseer in the “Zaman” as “fanaticism”.

Confederation President said that they strongly condemn the incident and call on the Turkish government to rectify the situation.

CPJ also negatively evaluated the measures taken against the “Zaman” newspaper.

“Instead of attacking newspapers, the Turkish government should take measures to implement the constitutional guarantees of press freedom and protect journalists’ rights,” the committee’s executive director Joel Simon said.
